Blessings in the Midst of Grief
Sharyl had been living in Broward County with her son and grandson. She was dependent on her son for financial support as she herself earns limited disability. When her son was tragically killed, Sharyl moved her grandson and herself to Volusia County, leaving everything behind. As a result, Sharyl found herself in a new city, raising her grandson with limited resources. She reached out to Salty Family Services and was connected with a mentor.
The mentor began working with Sharyl, building a relationship of trust and identifying multiple areas for them to work on together. As with all of our families, they took steps to create a family budget. Sharyl welcomed this guidance, sharing that she has hope that God will deliver her family and protect her grandchild from going into foster care.
One thing that stood out was the complete absence of furniture. When Sharyl moved, she left what furniture she had. She and her grandson were sleeping on air mattresses, without any other furniture. As Sharyl continued to meet with the mentor, she asked if we could assist with beds and living room furniture. The mentor got in touch with an SFS volunteer who coordinates furniture donations. The first thing provided was a bed. Then, additional donors came through with two couches, an end table, and a coffee table, which they not only donated but also delivered. Sharyl was deeply appreciative, saying, “Thank you all so much! I’m definitely so grateful. As a grieving mother, I feel so blessed right now. Thank you.”
Sharyl continues to meet with her mentor as she strives to strengthen her finances and provide a safe home for her grandson. We are thankful for those God has brought into Sharyl’s life and for His loving care in their lives.
