Rescued and Restored

This sweet young girl had been living with her mother after her parents broke up. But when her mother overdosed on fentanyl, it was discovered that the child had fentanyl in her system. At that point, the mother’s parental rights were revoked, and the child turned over to her father. He quickly did what was needed to provide for his daughter’s care, which included a change in employment—and a pay cut—to work a job that would allow him to be present with his daughter. Without hesitation, he took on the responsibility of being a full-time dad.

This change in circumstances necessitated a move to a new apartment with all the related expenses. That is when he reached out to Salty Family Services for assistance. He was matched with one of our mentors and they began working on a budget. He was already fairly frugal in his expenses, so they focused on how to increase his income after taking a lower-paying job. A Call Me When volunteer provided a generous grocery gift card, which was gratefully received. They continued their efforts to get on a path of financial stability.

The mentor learned that this man had attended church faithfully as a child because his grandmother would take him. He enjoyed a close relationship with her, but when she passed away, he stopped attending. Through the mentor’s gentle encouragement and because of the support he has received through Salty Family Services, this man has begun to consider returning to church and mentioned visiting Salty. The mentor offered to attend with him.

During these initial weeks of mentoring, the father was able to get a court judgment granting him full custody of his sweet young daughter. He is working through the guilt of leaving her in the care of her mother and continues to devote himself to her care. He has shared that the daughter has successfully recovered from the drugs that were in her system and is now healthy and strong. We are thankful to God for His tender mercy and guiding hand over this family.

Thanks to her loving father, willing to do whatever is necessary, this sweet young girl is enjoying improved health and hope for a brighter future.
